Description | Center-left, one-time dominant party founded by physician Maurice Curé. Party began as a militant advocate for workers of Indian origin until the introduction by the British colonial authorities of the right to vote on the Island in 1947 softened the party's platform and rhetoric. The first democratically held legislative elections in 1948 resulted in victory for Labor, which continued to lead the legislature until it elected the nation's first prime minister, Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, who took office on March 12, 1968 and held power for over 14 years. Party has been chaired by his son, ex PM Navin Ramgoolam, since Seewoosagur Ramgoolam's death in 1985 [Parti travailliste mauricien or, more commonly, Parti travailliste; Labor Party (PTr)] |
