Van Hollen defends DCCC efforts in exit memo

| Description | Two weeks after a GOP wave decimated the ranks of House Democrats and swept them from the majority, the party is telling its surviving members that the losses could have been even more severe.
In a Thursday memo sent to the Democratic caucus and obtained by POLITICO, outgoing Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen argued that the committee saved members who otherwise would not have escaped the treacherous political environment.
Republicans picked up at least 60 House seats, and the GOP holds leads in four of the six races that remain undecided. The combined forces of a 9.6 percent unemployment rate, the presence of well-funded conservative groups and a string of Democratic incumbents in GOP-friendly districts, said Van Hollen, made the party’s task extraordinarily difficult.
“We do take some solace in the fact that members and independent political analysts have uniformly said that the DCCC did everything it could to prepare for and wage tough campaigns,” wrote Van Hollen. “Indeed, while it may be small consolation given the magnitude of the losses, a review of the results finds that were it not for the efforts of our candidates and the DCCC, it could have been even worse.” |
