Description | North Carolina Senate candidate Elaine Marshall is viewing the six-week-long runoff campaign ahead of her as a mere formality before she can clinch the Democratic nomination.
In a campaign memo sent to reporters, Marshall strategist Thomas Mills claims that Marshall’s opponent, former state senator Cal Cunningham, “has no path to victory.”
The secretary of state’s nine-point victory May 4 was fueled by wins in 74 of the state’s 100 counties and nine of the 10 media markets in the state. Still, since she failed to reach 40 percent, Cunningham will have another shot an upending her during the June 22 runoff.
Mills told POLITICO Tuesday that while their campaign thinks Cunningham should abandon his bid and unite the Democratic party, “If they’re looking forward to getting beaten again, that’s fine.
“We’ve got a woman who is going to be the nominee. We’re not going to take the runoff for granted, that wouldn’t be smart. But everything we do going forward is going to focus on the general election campaign,” Mills said.
