DescriptionWASHINGTON – Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered carefully calibrated salvos to open the Senate Tuesday as the body prepared to debate and vote on the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

The full Senate will formally start debate on the nominee later Tuesday.

Mr. Reid, Democrat of Nevada, praised the six Republican senators who have already pledged to vote for the nominee, singling out Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina for their willingness to buck the party line.

"Many senators have said they regret how politicized the process of judicial nominations has become over the years," Mr. Reid said.
