DescriptionThe Ohio Democratic Party is in for a fight.

Not with Republicans, but among its own party members, namely, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.

Each wants to be the party's nominee for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican George Voinovich, who unexpectedly announced last month that he won't seek re-election in 2010.

isher and Brunner are friends and recognize the rare opportunity an open seat presents - a seat made even more desirable by recent Democratic success in the state and in Washington.

Fisher and Brunner recently met in private to discuss their parallel ambitions. They left ready to face each other in next year's primary.

Gov. Ted Strickland, uncharacteristically, has chosen sides early: He's backing Fisher.
