MADISON -- Tommy Thompson on Sunday night ended weeks of speculation that he would run for governor, announcing on Mother's Day that his family was unanimously opposed to another campaign and that he believed Mark Green was the right person to lead the GOP.
``Mark Green will put the state back on the right track. I will work tirelessly to campaign for Mark as we seek to restore the confidence and resolve that make Wisconsin great,'' said Thompson, who will be honorary chairman of Green's campaign.

Thompson, the state's longest serving governor (1987-2001) who had been urged by some to run a fifth time, has remained popular despite being out of the governor's office since 2001, when he became President Bush's HHS secretary. Thompson had kept even some of his closest confidantes guessing through Saturday and angered some former aides who were firmly in the Green camp; they believed Thompson's public musings hurt Green.
Republicans grumbled the open speculation was hurting Green's campaign by relegating him to a second-tier status and taking attention away at a time leading into this week's state GOP convention when the Green Bay congressman needed good press to build his name recognition.
But on Sunday, the word started to leak out that Thompson was unlikely to run. |
