Description | The race for governor is narrowing.
Republican sources told NewsChannel 8 that an announcement will be made Wednesday that Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats will drop his second failed bid for governor and will join U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle's ticket as his lieutenant governor candidate.
"I don't think that there was ever any doubt that Congressman Nussle was going to win the nomination, but what this does is allows them to concentrate ... and start focusing on the general election and not have to worry about a primary, which is going to save him resources," said David Roederer, who ran President George W. Bush's Iowa campaign.
Records show that Nussle has about three times more cash on hand than Vander Plaats.
The latest campaign disclosure forms show Nussle took in nearly $2.5 million. Vander Plaats took in just $460,000 and nearly half of that is a loan.
"The candidate that raises the most money tends to win. And so those candidates who aren't raising the money have to really kind of look at themselves and say, 'What's wrong? Nobody's investing in my effort.' That happened last week with Patty Judge when she folded her campaign, and now it's happened with Bob Vander Plaats," said David Yepsen, political columnist for the Des Moines Register. |
