Description | A group of religious leaders has accused two evangelical megachurches of acting like political machines for conservative officeholders, especially Ken Blackwell, the Ohio secretary of state and candidate for governor.
In a move that highlights the increasing presence of religion in state and presidential politics, a group of mostly moderate clergy asked the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the Columbus-area World Harvest and Fairfield Christian churches.
Their complaint, signed Sunday and sent to IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson, charges that the two churches and their affiliated organizations sponsored, played host to and funded activities to promote Blackwell, the Republican Party's most prominent conservative. |
