Description | "The job of defending the United States from terrorist attacks falls significantly on two former Pennsylvania congressmen -- one a Republican from Erie and the other a Democrat from the Lehigh Valley.
Tom Ridge, secretary of homeland security, occupies perhaps the most visible anti-terrorism post in the government, overseeing a sprawling agency with 170,000 employees, a budget of more than $25 billion and a never-ending roster of responsibilities.
Paul McHale, the first-ever assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, toils away in a less heralded job, working in his fifth-floor, D-ring office in the Pentagon. The office was destroyed by the crash of American Airlines flight 77 but was repaired by Sept. 11, 2002."
