Description | Upminster was one of only five Conservative gains from Labour in the last election and the most difficult - it was 50th on their target list. Keith Darvill had taken the seat for Labour in 1997 with a 15% swing. Neighbouring Romford also fell to the Tories - the party did well generally in this swathe of Essex seats running from Barking to Southend. Upminster is well-known in London terms as being the last station at the eastern end of the District line. On the borders with Essex, it comprises the solid Labour territory of Harold Hill, a sprawling council estate in the north which was built after the War to house the overspill population from London. It saw the first large-scale sale of council houses in the 1970s. In stark contrast, the southern part of the seat covers the middle-class and prosperous Cranham and Emerson Park. It has a 95% white population, tending towards the older age range, with 75% owner-occupation. Unemployment is low and many workers commute. Local politics are dominated by the Havering Residents' Association. The present MP is Tory Angela Watkinson, born and brought up locally in Upminster. She is currently shadow minister for public services, health and education. In the new boundary review, Upminster is likely to gain some territory from Hornchurch, making it safer for the Conservatives. In the meantime, it remains a highly marginal, swing seat.
