Description | Bolsover is synonymous with its long-serving, outspoken MP, the left-wing ex-miner, Dennis Skinner, affectionately known as 'The Beast of Bolsover'. Since 1945 only two men have represented this seat. Before Dennis Skinner won Bolsover in 1970, its MP was another ex-miner, Harold Neil (1945-50 as Clay Cross). The constituency lies in Derbyshire, bordering south Yorkshire. It was once the area that employed the most miners: now it employs none. Since the mines closed in the mid-nineties, the area has struggled to find a new direction. There are some agricultural areas and an archaeological site of interest at Creswell Crags. Hardwick Hall, home of Bess, is also here. In 2001 Dennis Skinner's majority was 49.1%, down from the 57.3% he had enjoyed in 1997 but still enough to make this the 37th safest seat for Labour.
