InfoTICHENOR, Isaac, a Senator from Vermont; born in Newark, N.J., February 8, 1754; completed preparatory studies; graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1775; studied law in Schenectady, N.Y.; appointed assistant commissary general in 1777 and was stationed in Bennington, Vt.; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Bennington, Vt., at the close of the Revolutionary War; member, State house of representatives 1781-1785, serving as speaker 1783-1784; agent from the State to the Continental Congress to present Vermont's claim for admission into the Union 1782-1789; State councilor 1786-1791; one of the commissioners to settle the boundary question with New York in 1790; associate justice of the State supreme court 1791-1796, chief justice 1794-1796; elected in 1796 as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Moses Robinson; reelected for the term commencing March 4, 1797, and served from October 18, 1796, to October 17, 1797, when he resigned, having been elected Governor; Governor of Vermont 1797-1807, 1808-1809; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1809; again elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1815, to March 3, 1821; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Bennington, Vt., December 11, 1838; interment in the Village Cemetery, Old Bennington, Vt.
