Enoch H. Williams has been a member of the New York City Council since 1978, representing the communities of Bed-Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill-Brownsville and portions of Crown Heights and East Flatbush. As a senior member of the City Council, Mr. Williams is currently Chairman of the Health Committee of the Council. In past years, he chaired the committees on Environmental Protection and Youth Services.
Mr. Williams is also a current member of the City Council committes on Land Use, Rules, Privileges & Elections, and Housing & Buildings, as well as the sub-committee on Permits, Dispositions and Concessions.
As a City Council Member, Mr. Williams has sponsored many important pieces of legislation benefitting the people of New York City, especially in the health-care field. For example, he has been the prime sponsor of laws and resolutions related to providing primary health care for under-served committees, as well as addressing such public-health problems as AIDS, tuberculosis, and sickle-cell anemia. He was one of the primary sponsors of the recently-passed "Smoke-Free Air Act," which restricts tobacco smoking in public places.
Mr. Williams also gives freely of his time to serve in many governmental and civic organizations. He is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the New York Urban League, and Unity Democratic Club. He is also a member of the American Institute of housing Consultants, and a former member of the Community Service Society. Mr. Williams ha served for years as Civilian Director of the New York City Selective Service System. He is also the founder of the Central Brooklyn Intergenerational Council, an organization dedicated to bringing together serior citizens and young people in our community.
Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Army for more than 40 years in both active duty and in a reserve capacity. He served in the Korean Conflict, and administered command responsibilities up to, and including, the Persian Gulf War. He retired in June 1995 as Commander of the New York Guard, with the rank of Major General (two stars).
Mr. Williamsattended Long Island University, where he received his B.S. degree in Business Management. He also attended New York University and the New School for Social Research, focusing on Urban Renewal in New York City.
Mr. Williams maintains a District Office at 1607 Fulton Street (corner of Schenectady Avenue), in the heart of Bedford-Stuyvesant, to better serve the community he represents. He also has a City Hall office at 250 Broadway, across from City Hall in Manhattan. He has a staff of six (6) persons who assist in meeting the needs of community residents.
