| Info | born in New Haven, Conn., November 29, 1908; attended the public schools of New York City; was graduated from Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y., in 1930, from Columbia University, New York City, in 1932, and from the theological department of Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C., in 1934; studied four months in Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor; was ordained to the ministry and officiated in New York City beginning in 1931; member of the New York City Council in 1941; publisher and editor of a newspaper in New York City 1941-1945; instructor at Columbia University Extension School, Department of Religious Education, 1932-1940; editorial writer for a New York daily newspaper in 1934; cofounder of the National Negro Congress; member of the Consumer Division, State of New York, Office of Price Administration, 1942-1944; member of the Manhattan Civilian Defense 1942-1945; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-ninth Congress; reelected to the eleven succeeding Congresses and served from January 3, 1945, to February 28, 1967, at which time he was excluded from membership in the Ninetieth Congress pursuant to H.Res. 278; chairman, Committee on Education and Labor (Eighty-seventh through Eighty-ninth Congresses); elected as a Democrat in a special election held on April 11, 1967, to fill the vacancy caused by his exclusion but did not appear to be sworn in; reelected November 5, 1968, to the Ninety-first Congress and served from January 3, 1969, to January 3, 1971; unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1970 to the Ninety-second Congress; died in Miami, Fla., April 4, 1972; cremated; ashes scattered over South Bimini in the Bahamas.
