Info | Lucas was a Democrat when voters repeatedly elected him sheriff and county executive in 1982. A Detroiter who remained popular in white suburbs, Lucas switched parties and won the Republican nomination for governor in 1986. It was a short-lived triumph. He was trounced by Democrat Jim Blanchard.
Lucas since has served as a Justice Department appointee of the first President Bush, and was elected to the nonpartisan Circuit Court in 1996. Laws forbidding judges older than 70 to seek election forced his retirement in 2002.
People will use anything, but with my experience, knowledge and wisdom, it would be foolish to use age against me, Lucas said.
Ficano released a statement saying Evans is doing a good job, and promising an endorsement in a few weeks. [Link]
