Medhanie’s professional career includes many significant accomplishments. After college, he worked as a high school special education teacher. He worked diligently with parents and administrators to create a curriculum that would both inspire and prepare at-risk students for life beyond high school.

After teaching, he worked in public policy and administration with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA). During his tenure at HACLA, he managed several housing programs for families, seniors, disabled and homeless individuals. He twice led a team that was successful in acquiring over $19 million towards the expansion of affordable housing for homeless men, women, and children.

He was also personally successful in acquiring several additional grants that garnered nearly $5 million towards affordable housing. He authored successful petitions to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that forced it to change policy on how it awards funds for homeless programs. He co-wrote HACLA’s testimony to the U.S. Congress’ Sub-Committee on Housing in response to a proposed Bush Administration bill that jeopardized affordable housing for families across the country. He worked closely with local leaders in crafting an affordable housing ordinance. He worked directly with congressional offices, officers in both the Republican and Democratic National Committees, with the Los Angeles Mayor’s office, and the City Council.

Medhanie also served as the preservation coordinator at HACLA. In this role, he coordinated efforts with the Los Angeles Housing Department, HUD, Mayor’s Office, and many for and non-profit organizations to preserve affordable housing for working families across Los Angeles. His analysis of the state of affordable housing was published in several publications.

Currently, he works as a financial consultant for a leading consulting firm. In this role, he advises companies of all sizes in complex matters including, acquisitions, compliance, financial reporting, bankruptcy, reorganization, and strategic planning.

In addition to his professional experience, Medhanie has worked with non-profit organizations to build schools in East Africa, increase awareness and aid for the crisis in Darfur, and connect people and resources to develop economies throughout Africa.

In this critical moment for New York City and for District 35, Medhanie’s background and experience will help lead our community in the right direction. He has directly witnessed how our schools are failing our children. He has worked with virtually every kind of organization and institution responsible for providing affordable housing. And in this moment of crisis for our financial markets, Medhanie not only has an understanding of the complex dynamics that are hurting our banks and economy but he has also seen firsthand what it’s doing to members of our community. Medhanie’s background and experience will make him a unique voice for our community in the New York City Council.

Medhanie holds a BA from San Francisco State University and an MBA from the Stern School at NYU.
