Info | Brian Norton Baird
Congressman Brian Baird doesn't just talk about helping people. He's been doing it his whole life. And he plans to keep right on doing it in Congress.
Brian learned it from his father, a teacher in a small town where you knew everybody and neighbors really cared about each other. And he learned it from his mother, who owned a small business and prided herself on giving to her community through volunteer work and community involvement.
Baird brings a unique perspective to his service in the U.S. House of Representatives. Brian was a licensed clinical psychologist who has practiced in Washington State and Oregon. He taught at the university level and is a former chairman of the Department of Psychology at Pacific Lutheran University. Prior to his election, Brian worked in medical centers, state and Veterans Administration psychiatric hospitals, community mental health clinics, group homes, substance abuse treatment programs, institutions for juvenile offenders, children's psychiatric units, head injury rehabilitation programs, and in private practice.
Brian was elected to serve the people of Washington State's Third Congressional District in 1998. He secured a seat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he serves on the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee and the Highways and Transit Subcommittee. Baird is also a member of the Science and Budget Committee.
Congressman Baird was elected President of the Freshman Democratic Class and also serves as a Regional Democratic Whip. Both positions afford him significant access to the House leadership and allow him to be a strong advocate for the needs of Southwest Washington in debates and behind the scenes.
Brian is deeply committed to working to make lives better in Southwest Washington and to provide excellent service to the constituents of the Third District. In his time in Congress, he has already taken the lead on a number of issues that affect everyday life in Southwest Washington. He is a primary sponsor of the Patients Bill of Rights -- legislation designed to ensure that doctors, not insurance companies, make decisions about an individual's health care. Brian is committed to deepening the Columbia River channel to allow access for more fully loaded and larger ships and to ensuring that the project is carried out in an environmentally responsible manner
