| Info | After Ted Strickland was first reelected to Congress, he placed a plaque in his office with the following quote from Scripture:
“And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”—Micah 6:8
Throughout his service as a minister, psychologist, a professor and a Member of Congress, Ted has worked to exemplify those simple, powerful words.
Ted has built up an impressive record on behalf of the people of Ohio. He helped author the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a federal initiative that now provides health insurance to millions of children of working parents. He’s led the fight to keep our promises to America’s veterans and to ensure that our troops have live-saving armor and equipment. And he’s brought millions in investments home to Ohio for roads, technology, economic development and health initiatives.
Ted is married to Frances Strickland of Simpsonville, KY. Frances is an educational psychologist and author of a widely-used screening test for kindergarten-age children.
Ted believes Ohio is in desperate need of change and that he has the leadership, the vision, and the determination to restore Ohio’s greatness.
In May 2005, he announced that he’s seeking to become governor of Ohio and said he will enter the office “ready to pour his heart and soul into fighting for the dignity of families and all people in Ohio.” As governor, he wants to focus on the core kitchen table issues that most Ohioans are concerned about—bringing good jobs to Ohio and making our schools among the best in the nation.
Because of his background in the ministry and social service, Ted believes that government is at its best when it’s guided by the heart and a good dose of common sense. He’s known for being a principled Democrat who unites folks from both parties, a member of Congress that represents a huge swath of Southern, Eastern and Northeastern Ohio.
He didn’t come to public service as a lawyer or an investor, but as the son of steelworker. Ted was born in on August 4, 1941 in Lucasville, Ohio, one of nine children. He spent his childhood active in church and school life. As a young man, he never imagined he’d be able to go to college until a high school teacher took him on a trip to Asbury College and Theological Seminary in Kentucky.
His family was able to piece together enough for tuition and, soon after graduating from Northwest High School, he found himself attending Asbury College in Kentucky, receiving a B.A. in History in 1963. He went on to attend the Asbury Theological Seminary and received a Master of Divinity. He continued his studies at the University of Kentucky, receiving a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology in 1980.
Professionally, Ted has served as a minister, a psychologist, and a college professor. He was the director of a Methodist children’s home, an assistant professor of psychology at Shawnee State University, and a consulting psychologist at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF).
In 1992, he was elected to Congress. After narrowly losing his congressional seat in 1994, he was once again elected to the 6th Congressional District in 1996. He has represented the district in Congress ever since. In 2002, the 6th district lines were radically redrawn, resulting in a congressional district that was substantially new. In all, he has represented twenty Ohio counties stretching from the suburbs of Cincinnati to the suburbs of Youngstown.
During his last five terms in Congress, Ted served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Ted is also an active member of the Congressional Steel Caucus and has vigorously opposed trade policies that threaten the steel industry.
During his last term, Ted became a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, and is the ranking Democrat on its Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. As a member of that committee, he has been tireless in his advocacy for full funding of promised veterans’ health programs. And last year he became a national leader in fight to see that our troops have life-saving armor and equipment.
