Info | Born at Emory Hospital in Decatur, Jason Carter was born into a family with deep southern roots and a tradition of community and public service. For generations they have served as the Scout leaders, the Sunday school teachers, the grade-school football coaches and the political organizers in their communities. Today, Jason is continuing in that tradition of service.
After graduating from Duke University, Jason followed in the footsteps of his great-grandmother, Lillian Carter by volunteering for the United States Peace Corps. In a rural South African village where people carried their water from the river and built their houses by hand from sticks and mud, Jason helped local schools recover from decades of neglect under Apartheid. As South Africa began its post-Apartheid struggle, Jason saw first hand the ability of political leadership to transform and inspire an entire community.
Upon returning from Africa, Jason attended the University of Georgia School of Law and graduated summa cum laude.
While in law school, his book, Power Lines: Two Years on South Africa’s Borders, was published by National Geographic.
Today Jason is an attorney at Bondurant, Mixon & Elmore where he has logged hundreds of pro bono hours litigating on behalf of some of Georgia’s most vulnerable citizens. He fought to protect voting rights, challenged an overtly partisan reapportionment of the state senate, and stood against a Photo ID requirement for voting in person. For his service, Jason received the Stuart Eizenstat Young Lawyer Award from the Anti-Defamation League.
In politics, Jason has campaigned for Democrats since before he could walk. More recently, he served on the Democratic Party of Georgia Executive Committee. In 2002, he co-founded the Red Clay Democrats, a young professionals group committed to energizing Georgia’s democratic future. And in 2006, he co-founded Democrats Work, a national volunteer service organization that engages Democrats in their communities.
Jason serves on the Board of Georgia Appleseed, a legal pro bono organization devoted to systemic change and social justice, where he also serves as President of the Georgia Appleseed Young Professionals Council.
In addition to his legal work, Jason serves as the Board Vice President of the Dekalb Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, and is also an active Board Member of the Georgia Afterschool Investment Council.
Jason lives in Candler Park with his wife Kate, their two sons Henry and Thomas, and their 100-pound dog, Jolene.
Jason's Grandfather is former President Jimmy Carter.
