Info | Robert Abrams, a graduate of New York University School of Law, Class of 1963, served in various governmental positions for twenty-eight years, establishing a remarkable public service record. He has made significant contributions to the well-being of our city, state and nation. His courageous efforts improved the lives of individual citizens, as well as strengthened and advanced our legal and social institutions.
Mr. Abrams began his public service career at the age of twenty-seven when he was elected to the first of three terms in the New York State Assembly. He fought for and achieved election law reform, changes in New York's then-archaic abortion law, and child abuse protection. Elected to three terms as Borough President of the Bronx, Bob Abrams represented with extraordinary effectiveness the diverse population of that county, adding new schools, libraries, and housing, as well as park and cultural investments.
Mr. Abrams was elected to four terms as Attorney General of the State of New York, achieving the highest margin of victory of any attorney general in history. He launched pioneering efforts in the areas of environment, consumer, and civil rights protection. He also led the office into criminal justice prosecutions and enforcement, and achieved needed changes in the law relating to the insanity defense, organized crime, and victims' rights. More than 250 of his legislative proposals were passed and signed into law. Bob Abrams was a national leader among attorneys general, becoming President of the National Association of Attorneys General and being selected by his colleagues as the recipient of the coveted Wyman award as the outstanding Attorney General in the nation.
In recognition of his achievements and the widespread respect for his work, Mr. Abrams has received more than 300 awards from academic, business, professional, public interest, religious, and philanthropic organizations. New York University School of Law accorded Mr. Abrams the Alumni Association Achievement Award in 1981, and its Public Interest Service Award in 1993.
Integrity, independence, and accomplishment have marked the career of Robert Abrams. It is hoped this event will inspire students now and in the future to embark upon public service.
Mr. Abrams is married to Diane Schulder Abrams and has two daughters, Rachel and Becky. He became a partner at the law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, LLP. in January 1994.
