| Info | Council Member McLaughlin has lived in Yonkers’ Fourth District for over 34 years and he is the oldest of four children to Patrick and Bernadette McLaughlin.
Council Member McLaughlin graduated from Cardinal Spellman High School, Bronx, New York. He attended Fordham University and graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. After working for a few years in the public accounting firm of Ernst & Young, he went to New York Law School were he obtained his Law Degree. He is currently licensed to practice law in New York and Connecticut.
Liam was formally Special Counsel for the City of Yonkers. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a former adjunct professor at Manhattan College.
In November 1999, he was elected to the Yonkers City Council representing the Fourth District. He was re-elected in 2001 and 2003 and is currently serving his third term.
Council Member McLaughlin is the Minority Leader of the City Council and is Chairman of the Budget Committee. Council Member McLaughlin is also a member of the Education Committee, the Real Estate & Economic Development Committee, the Municipal Operations Committee, the Intergovernmental Relations Committee, the Rules Committee, and the Legislation and Codes Committee.
He is a member of the New York State Bar Association, The Westchester County Bar Association, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Westchester Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, he is a Board Member of the Aisling Irish Community Center and a Board Member and President of Tara Circle.
Since being elected to the City Council, Liam McLaughlin has worked with the Mayor’s Office to deliver for his district and the City as a whole. Council Member McLaughlin believes that with the Administration and the City Council working together Yonkers benefits. Council Member McLaughlin has supported increased funding for the Board of Education, however, he also knows that the State must be held accountable to its constitutional mandate to educate the children of New York State. Yonkers Taxpayers alone cannot foot the bill for education. In order to help end the yearly education funding crisis Council Member McLaughlin regularly meets with the members of the State Delegation and The Governor’s Office to try to fix the State Education formula, which he feels, produces inadequate funding for our children.
Council Member McLaughlin has worked to improve our parks and playgrounds, increase Senior Citizen programs and has helped implement citywide beautification programs to rid Yonkers of litter and graffiti. He enthusiastically supports the proposal to bring a minor league baseball stadium and team to Yonkers. Council Member McLaughlin is working to make Yonkers a better place for all our families and he believes that recent ‘smart development’ has made Yonkers attractive to new businesses, netting the City thousands of new jobs. However, Council Member McLaughlin believes that an even greater future lies ahead of Yonkers and he will work in the City Council to make it happen.
