I want to genuinely thank people like you and BLUEDOGS for making me not the most annoying person on this site.

Something to ignore. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory when running a website.

RP -

New site user here. I'm a researcher who's found some of the historical US municipal elections data here very helpful (thank you!).

In an effort to improve coverage at the municipal level, I was thinking it might be possible to work with an organization with a national local presence to broadcast the existence of this site. I don't want to trample on site protocols, but I was wondering if there might be a way to credential contributors so that they could post specific content without having to earn permissions. (For example, perhaps an email blast could be tied to a PIN and a specific municipality. A user with that email address and PIN could then input election results for that municipality only but immediately.)

Anyway, I don't have this opportunity in hand yet, I just wanted to ask if it was something you might be interested in. Please let me know if you have any thoughts or reservations.

Best,

JH

Hi JH,

Interesting idea. How do you see this working? How would you pick the people to mail the account signups to?

I could see easily adding a "sponsored user" function where a trusted user could generate a code that would give a new user direct access to membership functions. That might be a good add.

Partitioning off the security to a portion of the site would require some security rework. Doable, but I'd have to consider the ramifications.

The reason the security exists as it is is partially for training reasons. First people have to get used to posting so they can ask questions and learn to read the messages posted by trusted users when they will almost inevitably need to help correct their data entry. Then they get access to "opinion" data like predictions and voting and endorsements. So they can start to get used to data entry controls before getting access to the real site data controls. It really isn't too hard to get access, just make a few informative posts, add a few predictions or endorsements and you get monitored data access.

One concern is that new users often learn how to enter data by looking at how experienced users have entered the data in other areas. If we limit security to an area with no data yet, then how will they see how to do it? I suppose we could make the rest read-only...

Certainly something to think about.

In terms of picking people to mail account sign-ups to, one brainstorm is the local election official.

The other thought I'd had was the National League of Cities. They might have contacts in every municipality and if they agreed to partner, it would just be a matter of personalizing emails. They might be reluctant to share their actual contact list (fear of this spam, etc.) but if they held the (email, municipality, PIN) list and sent along the (municipality, PIN) list to OurCampaigns and sent the PIN to the corresponding (email, municipality) that might be a way to do it as well.

Finally, I wonder if there isn't some way to suggest archival work as a scouting project. It seems like organizing and digitizing old election records for a historical society might be in line with Eagle Scout project requirements (not sure if there needs to be an outdoor element to it). The current site privileges might have to apply here, but it seems like another organization with a national presence that might see value in what OurCampaigns is working on and be able to contribute.

Do you think local election officials would be receptive to doing the data entry work? Maybe you could reach out and see if they would be interesting before I committed to doing the security change work.

Certainly any outreach to people who would like to help out with the data gathering would be appreciated.

Hi RP, I am interested in inputting election results for various town supervisor races in West Seneca, New York, a suburb right outside of Buffalo in Erie County. I currently am employed by the Erie County Board of Elections, so I have access to accurate and precise data. I am involved in West Seneca politically, and feel it is important to archive our elections. I see you input a lot of data in that Buffalo area. I have been using this website as both a private and public user for quite some time.

Hey RP, I'm an employee of the Erie County Board of Elections and I have edited on this sight in the past. I have access to sources and other things like that to accurately edit and create elections and candidates. May I have access once more?
