Description |
County Democratic parties had the option of holding primaries to instruct delegates to the state convention for the first time in 1908. Each county could hold the primary as it chose. Some counties only held a primary for governor; some held a primary for all state races, including uncontested races; some counties only held a primary for contested races; some omitted specific races in which a county resident was a contender so the local contender could win the instruction of all county delegates.
In the larger counties, this was a primary in the modern sense, with the totals reported. In smaller counties, these events had the character of a caucus, in which the voters only instructed the delegates. Only the primary vote is reported here, not the delegate totals.
