Description |
The Holman-Morse primary of 1944 was the marquee primary in Oregon that year and more contentious than the primary for the short term held the same day.
Morse, then aged 43, had served on the War Labor Board and was the dean of the Oregon Law School. He charged Holman with being a dangerous isolationist and a generally incompetent senator. Morse charged that Holman's votes in the Senate made the world a more dangerous place.
Holman, then 66, attacked Morse for being an inexperienced "newcomer," having lived in Oregon only 12 years, and he also called Morse a "New Deal carpetbagger." Holman charged Morse with living off a "slush fund." In a speech just prior to the primary, Holman stated "I am an isolationist if that means putting this country first." (Roseburg OR News-Review, 5/19/1944; Eugene Guard, 5/20/1944).
