The 10th most marginal seat of the 2010 general election, Oxford West and Abingdon is usually fight between the Conservatives and the Lib Dems. While much of the city centre falls outside the seat, it includes some historic areas like the old Jericho Boatyard site, as well as nine Oxford colleges. The market town of Abingdon on the banks of the Thames and River Ock has suffered flooding. Its business and science parks are home to big international companies. There are also lots of commuters. Villages include Kidlington, Sunningwell and Yarnton.This is an affluent seat, with many senior managers and professionals. More than 40% of adults are highly qualified and it has among the lowest unemployment in England and Wales, according to the 2011 Census. It ranks third in England and Wales for the percentage of people working in education.Conservative Nicola Blackwood unseated the Lib Dems by a slim majority of just 176 votes in 2010.
