BBC Constituency Profile:
This coastal constituency in north-east England includes the seaside resort of Redcar itself, sandwiched between Middlesbrough and the North Sea. It has miles of golden beach, popular with kitesurfers and has undergone much seafront regeneration. But the seat also includes much heavy industry including Teesport, the second largest docks complex in Britain, the Teesside Steelworks and the large chemical manufacturing site Wilton International. Manufacturing jobs have been in steep decline since the 1970s and the seat suffers from high unemployment.
The bulk of Redcar's population are English and 98.4% are white. The seat has a large Christian population, a relatively large amount of social housing and a large number of pensioners. The 2011 Census suggests there are more people in factory work and low-skilled jobs than managers and professionals.
Lib Dem Ian Swales broke 36 years of Labour rule in Redcar in 2010 when he won the seat with a majority of 5,214.
