Description |
BBC Constituency Profile:
Coatbridge was once famous as a coal and iron town. But the coal ran out and the ironworks were closed by the 60s. The wider constituency - Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill - has suffered from economic problems typical of the decline of heavy industry.
Many in this area still work in manufacturing, though numbers are decreasing. The Strathclyde business park - built on the site of an old tank factory - supports the local economy, as does the 60-acre Tannochside park. One notable change in this area has been an increase in the number of home-owners, as young professionals priced out of the city housing market have opted for Coatbridge and its commuter links to Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Labour's Tom Clarke has been an MP in this area since 1982 and held Coatbridge, Chryston and Bellshill in 2010 with a majority of 20,714 votes.
