BBC Constituency Profile:
Beginning just north of Ayr itself, Ayrshire Central sweeps up the west coast through the picturesque towns of Prestwick and Troon, taking in Prestwick International Airport and several seaside towns. Irvine, one of the main population centres, is a curious mix of historical beauty and modern, utilitarian architecture.
The one-time 14th century Royal Burgh was designated a new town in 1966, in response to a pressing need for social housing. Tourism, farming and manufacturing are the traditional industries in this seat, while the Irvine Bay Regeneration Company has been working to boost the area's economy. The seat is also home to golf courses like Royal Troon and Prestwick, which hosted the first British Open golf championship.
The Ayrshire Central constituency, created out of the 2005 Westminster boundary review, was won by Labour's Brian Donohoe. He held the seat in 2010 with a majority of 12,007.
