BBC Constituency Profile:
The seat of Stirling is centred on the ancient Scottish burgh, with its hilltop castle and historic battle sites of Bannockburn and Stirling Bridge. Stirling, which won city status in 2002, has good transport connections to the major cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh and is home to a large number of commuters.
The seat extends to Loch Lomond, the Trossachs - which became Scotland's first national park in 2002 - as well as Killin and Loch Tay, taking in 800 square miles of countryside. The constituency is relatively prosperous, with a large proportion of constituents in professional or managerial positions, while financial services group Prudential has a large site in the area.
The area was previously represented by former Tory Scottish secretary Michael Forsyth. Labour's Anne McGuire became the local MP in 1997. In January last year she announced she was not seeking re-election.
