Description |
Situated on the south coast and named after the iconic Royal Pavilion is the relatively affluent seat of Brighton Pavilion. The constituency includes all the fun bits of Brighton - the pier, The Lanes, city centre and nightlife. It stretches inland to the base of the South Downs at Patcham and Falmer and is home to a large population of young people - one in five is aged between 16 and 24.
With two universities, 40.4% of the population has a degree level qualification, and more than one in 10 is a student, according to ONS 2011 Census figures for England and Wales. More than one in four works in education, human health and social work.
Caroline Lucas made history as Britain's first Green MP here in 2010. At that election, she took the seat from Labour with 31.3% of the votes; Labour got 28.9%, Conservatives 23.7% and Liberal Democrats 13.8%.
