| Description |
Scotland's once dominant heavy industry is all but gone. However, in Airdrie and Shotts the legacy of quarrying and mining can be seen in its pockmarked landscape. Old industry has since given way to new, with call centres and research facilities choosing to come here.
The town of Airdrie is the commercial centre of this constituency and home to the district hospital, Monklands, while Shotts is perhaps best known as the location for Scotland's maximum-security prison. The new Airdrie-Bathgate rail line, which opened up links between Edinburgh and Glasgow, aimed to further improve the area's economic prospects.
The constituency, formerly known as Monklands East, has been held by several Labour grandees over the years, including former party leader John Smith, as well as Helen Liddell and John Reid. In 2010, Labour's Pamela Nash retained the seat for Labour, with a 12,408-vote majority
