Description BBC Constituency Profile:

The seat of Doncaster North is home to one of the few remaining coalmines operating in Yorkshire. The Hatfield Colliery employs 420 staff in Labour leader Ed Miliband's constituency, and played a starring role in the 1996 film Brassed Off. It has the 24th highest proportion of people working in mining of any constituency in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures.

Traditionally one of the most working-class seats in the country, one in five of the population works in construction or manufacturing and high proportions of people are employed in retail.

Like other South Yorkshire mining seats, Doncaster North is a Labour stronghold. However, following the "Donnygate" local government corruption scandal in the 1990s, Labour lost control of the council. In 2010, Labour's Ed Miliband held the seat with 47.3% of the votes; Conservatives got 21%, Liberal Democrats 14.9% and BNP 6.8%.
