BBC Constituency Profile:
Situated in north-west Wales, Arfon is based around the historic town of Caernarfon - site of the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1969. The constituency is also home to Bangor University.
Tourism and the public sector are major employers, and there is also a thriving media sector based around Bangor.
The high student population means the seat has a different demographic profile to other constituencies on the north Wales coast - 16.5% of the population are aged 65 or over, compared to 25% in neighbouring Aberconwy. The old Caernarfon seat had been a Plaid Cymru stronghold since it was won by Dafydd Wigley in the February 1974 election. Boundary changes for 2010 meant the new seat of Arfon was nominally Labour, but Plaid Cymru's Hywel Williams won with 36% of the vote, ahead of Labour on 30.4%, the Conservatives on 16.9%, the Lib Dems on 14.1% and UKIP on 2.6%.
