Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

This east London constituency saw much redevelopment for the 2012 Olympics. The huge Westfield Stratford City shopping mall opened in 2011 and new homes - many of them high-end apartments - are still being built. North of the Thames, it enjoys excellent transport links to central London and Canary Wharf.

But West Ham remains deprived - with high unemployment and child poverty rates. Much of its workforce are in low-skilled jobs. It is ethnically diverse, with more than 100 languages spoken. Only 34.5% of residents identified themselves as white in the 2011 Census. More than a quarter of the population is Muslim - the Respect party placed second here in the 2005 general election. It has the biggest population overall of all UK constituencies. The bulk of residents are 44 or younger, with few pensioners.

Labour's Lyn Brown held the seat in 2010 a whopping 22,534 votes ahead of the Conservatives, one of the largest majorities in the UK.
