BBC Constituency Profile:
West of London, Uxbridge and South Ruislip is a relatively affluent, commuter-belt constituency. It has Tube and railway stations and good motorway links.
There is a big student population, which boosts the large private rental sector. As well as Brunel University, Buckinghamshire New University has a campus here. The constituency is ethnically diverse and has among the highest percentages of people working in the transport industry in the country, due to its proximity to Heathrow Airport. Other employers include the borough council, Hillingdon Hospital and the retail sector. RAF Northolt - home to the Royal Squadron - is based locally. The seat is also home to the European headquarters of businesses including Canon and Coca Cola.
This seat has been held by Conservative Sir John Randall since 1997 but he is retiring and London Mayor Boris Johnson will stand in his place. Sir John Randall held his seat in 2010 with a comfortable 11,216 vote majority ahead of Labour.
