BBC Constituency Profile:
A major office and retail centre for north-east London and Essex, Romford has seen much growth and investment in recent years. It has among the highest percentages of administrative and secretarial workers, and of people in the building trade, in England and Wales. Retail and finance are other major employment sectors - many residents commute to London. Romford is part of Greater London and home to Havering borough council but has historic links to Essex. The seat includes Romford's greyhound stadium.
According to the 2011 Census, home ownership is high and the social housing sector is smaller than average - a former council house in nearby Harold Hill was chosen by Margaret Thatcher to launch the right to buy policy in 1980.
Largely Conservative held since 1974, it went to Labour from 1997 to 2001. Conservative Andrew Rosindell had a majority of 16,954 votes over Labour in 2010. The BNP retained their deposit.
