BBC Constituency Profile:
Situated in east London is the seat of Dagenham and Rainham. Dagenham's economic history is intertwined with the passing of the massive Ford motor works, which stopped full car production in 2002. Rainham is home to Tilda Rice Ltd and Rainham Steel.
The seat is at the centre of the London Riverside project to redevelop disused industrial land along the River Thames, which could generate 19,000 new jobs and 5,000 new homes by 2020. The seat has the 15th highest proportion of lone parents of any in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures. A fifth of the population lives in social housing. One in 10 works in construction. Significant communities of Afro-Caribbean and Asian residents live here.
Dagenham has been Labour since 1945. In 2010, Jon Cruddas held the seat with 40.3% of the votes; Conservatives got 34.3%, BNP 11.2% and Liberal Democrats 8.6%.
