Description |
Continued population decline in the East End combined with local government reform to result in radical boundary changes. This was a new constituency covering the southern half of the still-new London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and was made up of the old Stepney constituency (held since 1964 by Wilson-loyalist and former Cabinet Minister Peter Shore) and the southern half of the abolished constituency of Poplar (held since 1964 by the left-winger - and legendary Commons bookie - Ian Mikardo).
