Description |
During the two General Elections of 1974, the Labour Party committed itself to renegotiating the terms of Britain's membership of the EEC and for the renegotiated treaty to then be voted on by the public. Labour formed a minority government after the indecisive election of February, and won a narrow majority in October.
The question put to the electorate was as follows:
Do you think the UK should stay in the European Community (Common Market)?
This was the first referendum ever to be held throughout the United Kingdom.
