Description A new constituency created out of the majority of the old Crewe constituency and a large part of the old Nantwich constituency. The Conservatives would have been ahead by a large margin on these boundaries in 1979; Dunwoody's victory was thus technically a Labour gain (one of only a handful on what was otherwise a poor election for the party) and was widely regarded as a personal triumph for Dunwoody.
