This part of Sheffield has been held by Labour since 1935. Eddie Griffiths represented the area from 1968 to 1974. He was succeeded by Joan Maynard who held the seat until 1987. David Blunkett was first elected in 1987 on Maynard's retirement with a huge majority of 24,191.

There was little swing in either 1997 or 2001. Blunkett's total vote in 2001, however, was less than his majority four years earlier with turnout dropping to 47%.

In 2005 David Blunkett received the highest share of the constituency vote and highest percentage majority (55.4%) in the region. This was in spite of a 6.4% swing to the Liberal Democrats.

Following the boundary changes in South Yorkshire at the next general election, Sheffield Brightside and Sheffield Hillsborough will no longer exist as separate constituencies. The new seat of Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough has all but two of the wards (Walkley and Darnall) of the Brightside division as well as the Hillsborough ward from the Hillsborough seat. A large number of people are employed in manual work as the manufacturing industry remains important, though now centred in smaller firms to the east of the city, and still provides many jobs in the constituency. Steel and cutlery are still produced in large volumes, but by far fewer people.

Most jobs are now found on industrial parks near the M1 and in the retail areas. Hillsborough itself has a thriving shopping centre. The biggest single employer is the Meadowhall retail complex at the border with Sheffield South East. The public sector is another major employer, including the 1,100-bed Northern General Hospital.
