Description BBC Profile:
Scunthorpe was a new creation for the 1997 general election, mainly from the Glanford and Scunthorpe seat which had been won for Labour by Elliot Morley in 1987.

Morley's majority in 1987 was just 512 votes. He expanded his lead in 1992 to more than 8,000. Morley's first election in the revised Scunthorpe seat left him with a 14,173 majority. This has shrunk in the two general elections since, but Labour's lead remained 8,963 in 2005.

At the election, parts of the Ridge local government ward in Brigg and Goole are brought into this seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The constituency encompasses the famous Lincolnshire steel town itself and a large expanse of rural North Lincolnshire to the south and east.

Scunthorpe is a town founded on the steel industry in the mid-19th Century using local ironstone, and its fortunes have risen and fallen with the industry which has declined since the 1980s.

Other industries have moved in to fill the gaps including food, electronics and chemicals companies and Lloyds Banking Group has a large call centre in the constituency; unemployment is high, however.
