BBC Profile:
A by-election in 1989 to replace Leon Brittan on his appointment as a European Commissioner saw the seat retained by the Conservatives. The 27-year-old William Hague, defending a majority of nearly 20,000, held the seat by 2,634 votes. In the four general elections since, Hague has re-established the lead for the Conservatives and his 2005 majority was 17,807.
At the election, Richmond is enlarged with the addition of some small Hambleton wards from the abolished Vale of York division. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This is farming country, from the hill farming of Swaledale and Wensleydale, to the lusher areas further east and upland sheep country on the North York Moors.
A third of the population are country dwellers and tourism is a major industry. The constituency includes the northern part of the Yorkshire Dales national park - which draws more than eight million visitors a year - as well as attractions like Middleham Castle, Catterick racecourse, Aysgarth Falls and Richmond itself. There are no big towns, the largest being the North Ridings county town, Northallerton, and Richmond.
