BBC Profile:
The Conservatives held the constituency of Wirral West for decades until Labour's Stephen Hesford took the seat in 1997. Hesford extended his majority on a reduced turnout in 2001 and was re-elected in 2005, after a recount, with a majority of 1,097. Hesford is not contesting the seat at the 2010 election.
At the election, the seat gains two part-wards from Wirral South and one from Wallasey. It loses two part-wards to Birkenhead and two to Wallasey. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
On the far side of the Wirral peninsula in north west England, Wirral West is the wealthiest and most rural of the four constituencies on the peninsula, and therefore popular with commuters.
Despite its name, it is in fact situated on the north-western corner of the peninsula facing the Irish Sea and the banks of the river Dee.
