BBC Profile:
Leigh has returned a Labour MP in every contest since 1922. The current MP is Health Secretary Andy Burnham who won the seat in 2001 after his predecessor stepped down. In 2005, Mr Burnham won by a majority of 17,272.
At this election, boundary changes have resulted in some movement of part-wards between the seat and neighbouring Makerfield and Worsley.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Leigh is on the old Lancashire coalfield, nestled between Manchester and Liverpool, and is made up of the eponymous town and several smaller working-class communities. Light industry, in the form of printing and electronics, has replaced the declining mining and textile industries, and Leigh is a vibrant retail centre today.
Leigh bears all the hallmarks of a solid, stable, working-class community, with a high proportion of manual workers.
The National Coalfields Programme has invested 19.4 million pounds in the site of the former Bickershaw Colliery for regeneration, and there is also a regeneration project under way at the picturesque Pennington Country Park right in the heart of the seat.
Despite a good road network and its proximity to Liverpool and Manchester, Leigh now has the dubious distinction of being the largest town in the UK without access to the rail network.
