Lancaster and Wyre is Conservative, having been won from Labour in 2005, while Blackpool North and Fleetwood has been Labour since 1997. There is also the significant economic contribution made by the university's 17,000 students, many of whom live in the constituency.

The town of Fleetwood has profited from an increase in tourism in recent years after massive regeneration of the promenade and market areas.
