Description |
BBC Profile:
The two constituencies from which this new seat has been created are represented by different parties. Lancaster and Wyre is Conservative, having been won from Labour in 2005, while Blackpool North and Fleetwood has been Labour since 1997. Due to these boundary changes, there will be no sitting MP at the coming election, meaning the people of Lancaster and Fleetwood will be sending somebody new to Westminster.
This new seat comprises most of the wards from the old Lancaster and Wyre seat, five wards from the old Blackpool North and Fleetwood seat and a part-ward from Morecambe and Lunesdale.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This new Lancashire constituency combines the historic town of Lancaster with the coastal town of Fleetwood, as well some other small rural towns and villages.
Lancaster University is a major local employer, with over 2,000 staff. The university is vital for the areas economy with a current annual income of just under 150 million pounds. There is also the significant economic contribution made by the university's 17,000 students, many of whom live in the constituency.
The town of Fleetwood has profited from an increase in tourism in recent years after massive regeneration of the promenade and market areas.
Rallings & Thrasher Notional:
Lab 16,496 (42.43%)
C 13,068 (33.61%)
LD 6,081 (15.64%)
Green 2,278 (5.86%)
