Description |
BBC Profile:
The ancestor seat of Knowsley North and Sefton East has been Labour since its creation in 1983. George Howarth has been the MP there since 1986 and in 2005 he gained a majority of 16,269.
The other ancestor seat, Knowsley South (Huyton at the time), was former Labour Prime Minister Harold Wilson's seat for 40 years.
At the election, following boundary changes the new seat of Knowsley combines wards from Knowsley North and Sefton East with others from Knowsley South.
Situated to the east of Liverpool and centred on the town of Knowsley, the seat also includes the towns of Kirkby and Huyton-with-Roby.
The constituency retains the characteristics of much of the rest of the Merseyside by having a very low ethnic minority population, comprising just over 1% of the population.
A large proportion of residents - 34% at the 2001 census - live in social housing, many of them on somewhat run-down council estates.
Knowsley Hall and Park is the ancestral home of the Earls of Derby and is now home to a safari park.
