Description BBC Profile:
After its creation in 1974, the seat was held for one term by the Liberal Party, but from 1979 onwards it became Conservative. The Tories retained control until 1997 when the Liberal Democrat Andrew Stunnell took victory at the general election. He has held the seat since then, winning in 2005 with a majority of 7,748.
At the election, the seat swaps one part-ward with Cheadle and two part-wards with Stockport. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This commuter dormitory to the south-east of Stockport and Manchester is mainly middle-class and heavily residential.

It contains a number of suburban communities including Bredbury, Romiley, and Marple, beyond which moors and farms run into the Pennine foothills.

Unemployment is historically low, and the traditional cotton industry has been replaced with light industry and office-based employment. A significant number of residents commute to work in the financial and service sectors found predominantly in Manchester and Stockport.

According to the 2001 census, the population is predominantly white and four-fifths of accommodation is owner-occupied.
