After the constituency had swung between the Conservatives and Labour throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, Alastair Burt held on to Bury North for the Tories from 1983 until 1997. In 1997, Labour took control and David Chaytor became MP. He has held the seat ever since, but will stand down at this election.
At the election, Church ward is now entirely within this seat's boundaries, while the part-ward of Unsworth is lost to Bury South.

Bury is one of the more prosperous former textile towns in Lancashire, and has in recent years reinvented itself as part of the Manchester commuter belt. It was able to buck the trend of post-textile decline because it had other industries like paper-making, heavy and light engineering, and chemicals to fall back on.
As well as Bury itself, the seat includes other small towns to the north, such as Tottington and Ramsbottom.
Commuters use the M62 and M66 motorways that criss-cross the seat, while the MetroLink tram operates a frequent service from Bury centre through Manchester city centre to Altrincham. Manchester Airport is half an hour away by road.
