Description BBC Profile:
The new seat of Newton Abbot is essentially equivalent to the old Devon constituency of Teignbridge. This had been a Tory seat until, in 2001, Richard Younger-Ross took it for the Liberal Democrats with a majority of more than 3,000. In 2005 he doubled his majority to 6,215.

The new constituency, created in the boundary review, does not contain the northern and western wards of Bovey, Chudleigh, Haytor, Kenn Valley, Moorland, Teignbridge North, and Teign Valley, which are now in the new Central Devon seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The area consists of rolling countryside, from the granite tors on Dartmoor to the long stretches of sandy beach by the coastal towns of Dawlish and Teignmouth.

The centre of this constituency is the small market town of Newton Abbot, while the northern three-quarters consists of rural villages. It is a sparsely populated region.

From Starcross to Shaldon the coast provides important additional income, attracting many tourists, especially walkers enjoying the South West Coastal Path, which runs over 650 miles from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset.
